Under the agreement, NAIPR’s Frontlist Plus Universal service will be made accessible within Above the Treeline’s Edelweiss service, and new Edelweiss service levels will be made available for Frontlist Plus Universal publishers.

“We’re really excited to partner with NAIPR on what is a common mission—to help publishers, sales reps, and booksellers become more efficient in the process of getting the right books in their customers’ hands,” said John Rubin, founder and CEO of Above the Treeline. “The different NAIPR service levels will allow publishers who might not need the full Edelweiss service or the full Edelweiss service for every title to participate at the level they need.”

Frontlist Plus Universal files will be made available for download on the Edelweiss website this Fall 2012 selling season, as the first step toward integrating the two products. In the near future, publishers will have the ability to upgrade their Frontlist Plus Universal service to allow NAIPR reps to create marked-up catalogs for their accounts and for retailers to integrate publisher titles into their Edelweiss orders.

Bob Rooney, executive director of NAIPR, states, “This new agreement allows NAIPR to continue to keep faith with our members, our participating publishers, and our independent booksellers. Having Frontlist Plus Universal integrated into the leading metadata management and distribution product, Edeweiss, is a great opportunity for everyone in the bookselling chain―publishers, independent reps, and booksellers―to benefit. Introducing new levels of service within Edeweiss allows publishers to participate at the levels they see fit on a title-by-title basis and to control costs as we move to an ever-greater digital transfer of information.”

For more information, please contact Bob Rooney at NAIPR at robert.rooney@naipr.org or John Rubin at Above the Treeline at john@abovethetreeline.com.

“We know that there are many smaller publishers in the industry where a stand-alone seasonal catalog within Edelweiss does not necessarily make sense. Now we have an option for these publishers to join and use Edelweiss, and to add their titles to the compilation catalog we’re calling Serendipity,” said Above the Treeline CEO John Rubin, “We’re really looking forward to serving these smaller publishers and growing a strong and diverse title base within Edelweiss.”

Serendipity clients will be able to create a branded publisher profile and add rich, complete title information to Edelweiss via the online entry wizard. Once titles are in Edelweiss, clients can use features such as html formatted emails, hyperlinks, PDF creation, and sharing via Facebook and Twitter to promote and share their title information with others. In addition, titles added to Edelweiss via Serendipity will be accessible by Edelweiss’ user base of 2,000 book industry professionals via keyword search, geosearch, “buzz” search, and the “browse titles” feature. Via the geosearch feature, a title-specific alert will automatically be included in the weekly Edelweiss email update to over 4,000 book industry professionals based on their location and the author’s residence, place of birth, or other biographical connections.

Above the Treeline is also introducing an affiliate program that will allow third parties to refer new Serendipity clients and receive back a portion of the first month’s billing.

“We’ll be talking with booksellers, bloggers, and others about this new partnership program,” said Mark Evans, Treeline’s Director of Marketing, “We’ve already seen significant interest in our conversations so far. Some booksellers see this as a way to organize and manage the many individual solicitations they receive while receiving some revenue at the same time.”

Serendipity will also connect publishers and authors to industry catalogs. Edelweiss will be powering digital companion catalogs for the upcoming regional trade associations fall shows. Exhibitors at the shows can use Serendipity or Edelweiss to include titles in these online companion catalogs and add show-specific notes to each title as needed.

Pricing for Serendipity will be $20 per month for the first title and $10 per month for each additional title and payment will be made by Serendipity clients via a monthly credit card subscription.

Ann Arbor, Michigan - June 1st, 2010 - Today, Above the Treeline introduced a new way for book industry professionals to search for titles and authors of interest: GeoSearch. GeoSearch allows users to specify geographic criteria to search digital catalogs within Edelweiss, Above the Treeline's market-leading digital publisher catalog service, for titles connected to cities, states, colleges, and universities across North America. GeoSearch is freely available to registered Edelweiss users.

How It Works

The user simply specifies a starting location and a radius in miles. GeoSearch returns all titles connected to locations within the radius specified. The locations are mapped with coded markers and the map is accompanied by a corresponding location summary in order by distance. The actual titles are also provided for the selected location. Click on the image below for a view of a sample GeoSearch result, with notes. Click here for a clean view (without notes).

To refine the search, the user can specify filter criteria that includes BISAC subject category, format, pubdate, publisher, tags, and more.

GeoSearch currently finds title connections to geographic locations using automated logic that searches for patterns within author biography text such as "lives in New York City". Within the next three months, title content relevancy will be added as well as publisher-supplied title coding to supplement the automated logic. In addition, international locations will be supported.

John Rubin, Above the Treeline's founder and CEO, was enthusiastic about GeoSearch's ability to help booksellers, librarians, and reviewers more easily connect to authors and titles of local interest. "We're really proud of this new feature," he said, "I think it is a great addition to Edelweiss and clearly advances our mission to help publishers, booksellers, librarians, and bloggers connect titles and readers."

GeoSearch Summary Data

By summarizing the GeoSearch contents of approximately 30,000 title-location matches, states and universities can be ranked by author presence. Below is a list of the top 15 states, ranked by most titles published by connected authors (live there, raised there, born there) relative to the state's total population. In addition, there is a list of top U.S. universities based on titles published by connected authors (attended, graduated, faculty member):
