Greetings!
After all of the news we sent out last week (the Books@BEA announcement, the new List View release, and oodles of new catalogs) we had a slower news cycle for this week's email.

I will take the opportunity to review a few things:
  • Stay tuned for details on a cool promo from Hay House that will start in April.  Just by using Edelweiss, Hay House accounts will earn the chance to win $1,000 of Hay House merchandise.  More on this next week.
  • We've had a couple of question on this, so retailers & readers: remember that you can easily access your Rep Tags on the "Tags" tab of Edelweiss.  We added a second tag cloud with your rep tags there a couple of months ago.  See a screenshot right here.
Cheers,

Mark

Tip of the Week: Editing Custom Attributes in the List View
blossom
Buyers: A few months ago, we added the ability for users working a catalog to edit title data that will be exported directly in the List View, rather than only editing in the "Export Preview".  This is a handy feature for any buyer or title data administrator because it lets you edit things like the title, or author, or format code, as you review titles in the full catalog list view.

Many things can be handled by mapping in Edelweiss (such as your store-specific vendor codes) or by export rules (such as removing punctuation or abbreviating) so that you do should not need to make routine adjustments in this manner - the idea is that you would use this for handling exceptions to the norm. Also, for systems that have custom fields in Edelweiss, this is another way to access them for editing - such as second store section/category.
  • Go to the "Administration" tab in Edelweiss, and select the "Import/Export" section from the list at left.  Then select the "POS Default" link.  See this screen capture.
  • Check the box that says "Enable POS-specific editing in catalogs." Note that this is a user-specific preference, so each person that may need this will need to enable it separately..
  • You will now see a link on the right side of the List View for each title that says "Edit Wordstock Attributes" (or whichever POS system you have).  You can use this link to edit exportable fields from the List View.

Greetings!
A bunch of new catalogs this week: Hyperion Fall 2010, Thomas Nelson Fall 2010, a Spanish language Hay House catalog, a couple of niche catalogs from Fordham, Random House mass market for September, and IPS "O'Reilly and Partners" tech catalog for May releases.  See the list with links below.

Also, we rolled out a new and improved version of the List View earlier this morning.  Not only are there some nice cosmetic and usability enhancements, but the performance (speed of loading, page changes, etc) should be better.  See summary directly below for more info.

Finally, we're really excited to be working with Reed Exhibitions and the BookExpo America team to provide Books@BEA, the official on-line product catalog for titles being featured at BookExpo America 2010.  Check out the press release, the great article on Edelweiss by Michael Cairns published this morning at at his terrific blog Personanondata, and feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions about the project.  Participation will be free for all BookExpo exhibitors.

Cheers,

Mark

New, Improved List View Rolled Out Tuesday
Earlier today (Tuesday, March 9th), we implemented a new and improved List View.  Nearly all the functionality is exactly the same as before (exceptions noted below), but with enhanced performance and cosmetics.  The new version of the List View includes:
  • A cleaner look, with a white background instead of the previous gray.
  • Markup areas in shaded boxes directly below the bibliographic data. The benefits to this are that the boxes can expand downwards comfortably, so people can easily see all notes and tags.
  • Faster processing when saving multiple order quantities on long pages.
  • A new visual cue for saving: When you type a number in either a box for a suggested order for an account, or as a buyer entering an order number, the box will light up in orange when you move to the next title or box. This is just a reminder that this quantity has not yet been saved. As always, you can click SAVE or use the shortcut CTRL-S to save quantities on the whole page at any time. The boxes will then revert to blue.
  • Enhanced system performance when entering and navigating catalogs.
  • The detail page is now reached by clicking on the title itself, and the separate 'detail page' hyperlink has been removed.  The popup box that used to come up when you clicked on the title is still accessible - just click on the author name instead.

Click on the image below for a closer look at the new List View.

Greetings!
This week we have Disney's Fall 2010 catalog and March's Internet buzz titles.  Also, a reminder that you can allow your publisher reps to view and print your Edelweiss orders.

Finally, check out our summary of cool new Edelweiss features coming over the next couple of months.  We're excited and hope you will be, too!

Cheers,

Mark
Tip of the Week: Sharing an Order with Your Rep
Retailers & Readers: remember - by default orders you create within Edelweiss are private to your organization.  However, you can easily share your orders with your sales rep or publisher rep.  Simply check the box in the "Edit Order" area as shown below.  Note that this does not place the order, but allows your publisher rep to view, print, or export your order.

Feature Shock: What's Coming Soon to Edelweiss
blossomWe're excited about a few of the new features we've got in the works for Edelweiss this Spring and thought we'd share some information on what you can expect to see over the next few weeks and months.  Stay tuned for more information on these new features:
  • Subject/Format Mapping: Retailers will appreciate the ability to map to POS departments using a combination of bisac subject category and bisac format code.  This has come up repeatedly, primarily connected to Children's categories.  We listened!
  • Google Map Authors and Titles: A different kind of "mapping" entirely!  Soon we'll introduce the ability to search Edelweiss based on geographic criteria in conjunction with the currently available filter criteria.  Set an address and a radius to search and results will be mapped on Google maps based on available author bio info (residence, birthplace, universities attended or affiliated) and title setting or relevance.
  • Galley Requests (with digital galleys): Edelweiss will soon provide the ability for publishers to offer galleys to readers and retailers using a "request" feature.  Also, as we announced in January, we're partnering with NetGalley to allow publishers to offer digital galleys as well.
  • Custom Market Views: As the number of users and publishers have grown, we've seen the need to provide different views of the system.  Soon retailers and other catalog readers will be able to choose between a number of different market views such as General Trade, Christian Trade, Academic, and others.  Each view will provide a custom set of publishers, catalogs, and titles specifically for that market.

Tip of the Week: Catalog Covers Now Large, Zooming
Don't  know about you, but one of the things that we like about Edelweiss is the way the book cover images "zoom out" when you click on the thumbnails.  But what about the catalog covers?  Some of them are très cool and an important part of the catalog itself.  And there's something about seeing those tiny thumbnails and not being able to actually *see* them.  Thus, we recently added the "zoom out" feature to the catalog covers so that when you click on the catalog cover image it does the same as the book covers.

BeNAL-Summer-2010cause the feature is new, many of the catalog covers are still small but quite a few have larger versions.  We hope you enjoy.  To the left: NAL Summer 2010 thumbnail.  Click for a larger version (no zooming from this email, sorry!)

Greetings!
Retailers and Readers: we've introduced a terrific new feature to assist you in managing your tags - see the "Tip of the Week" item directly below.

In response to a few requests, we're going to designate a couple of upcoming Edelweiss training/demo sessions as "Intermediate" to review some of the more advanced features of Edelweiss.  These special sessions will be on Thursday, February 18th and the Thursday, February 25th at 4 pm EST.  If you consider yourself an advanced beginner or intermediate user, please feel free to sign up and learn more about Edelweiss.

This week we have a few new catalogs from Moody Publishers (including a full backlist) and a dozen drop-ins.  See the lists and links below.

Cheers,

Mark
Tip of the Week: Manage Your Tags
Retailers and Readers: Last week we implemented a very handy new feature that lets you manage your tags.  You can now merge, rename, or delete tags en masse rather than title by title.  Administrators have the authority to do this for the full organization.  Non-admins can manage their own tags, leaving the others intact.  Click on thumbnail below for a screen shot.
