Edelweiss Weekly Update – Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

New version on the way! We’ve heard from many of you over the last few months about what aspects of Edelweiss you love and what things you’d like to see added or changed.  The system has evolved rapidly over the past few months and we’re now busy on improvements to simplify browsing, finding, and organizing catalogs.  In the revised workflow, catalog readers will not need to copy catalogs to their working folders to begin ordering and any notes from sales reps will always show up when looking at a catalog, regardless of how the catalog was accessed.  This should benefit all users, but especially new users and those who use the system only occasionally.  I’ll be describing more over the next few weeks about what features you can expect to see.  We’ll be reaching out to a group of users to ask for help in testing the new interface before we roll it out to everyone.  If you’d like to participate in a round of testing, let us know and we’ll add you to the list.

Do you use the Edelweiss Internet Buzz   feature that tracks how many times titles are mentioned in twitter and in blogs?  If so and you find it useful, please tell us about it.  We’re talking with someone about writing a small article on the feature and would like to connect the author with some booksellers or other professionals that have found it helpful.  Thanks!

Finally, we had many people at the regional shows asking about our Webex demo’s: they are one hour long, require a phone and a computer with internet, and we offer them Tuesdays at 11:00, Thursdays at 4:00.  Just drop us a line and let us know what day and time you’d like to participate and we’ll email you the link you need to access the presentation.

TIP OF THE WEEK

We’ve talked about keyboard shortcuts before and we’ll probably talk about them again.  That’s ‘cause the 20% of the people in the world who actually do 80% of the work know that keyboard shortcuts are made of pure awesomeness.  Do I have your attention?  Good.  Ruth has made a document that summarizes Edelweiss’ List View and Title Detail Page shortcuts.  If you work catalogs within Edelweiss, give it a gander.

FEATURES & FIXES

  • The Internet Buzz info is now visible directly in the List View.  If a title has any activity on Twitter or in blogs, there will be a small green bar that indicates the amount of activity relative to other titles in Edelweiss.  See the image below.  Clicking on the bar itself will launch a new browser tab with the actual results.

You may need to use the “Add elements” control () in the List View to turn on these new elements.  Also, if you don’t see the new elements right away, try clicking on your browser’s “reload/refresh” button.

  • Another new feature is the ability to “Show All Content” and “Show All Comps” for all titles in the current List View page.  The command is available within the “Actions” list at the top-right of a List View.  This can save time and mouse clicks when you are viewing the detail info for all or many titles in a List View.  See the image below.

NEW PUBLISHER

We’re delighted to announce, and I’m sure many of you are delighted to hear, that W.W. Norton will be joining Edelweiss!  We’ll send out info on when you can expect to start seeing Norton catalogs in the system.

NEW CATALOGS

As always, email me or edelweiss@abovethetreeline.com if you have any problems, questions, or suggestions.
